On the Shores of Lake Tekapo is this gorgeous stone church.  We had been photographing there for a while in very bland light, when the clouds suddenly parted and this amazing sunset light shone onto the church.

The Pink Rosebud

Canon 7D, 100mm Macro Lens, Textured Overlay on background only.

Beautiful Rosebud.  I'm surprised the roses are still flowering as we're in drought - and have had only one light bit of rain since Feb 6th.  It's now end of March and still no rain is in sight, nor has autumn really made a mark with long hot sunny days.  I'm actually ready for cooler temperatures.

It Ain't Easy Being Green - II

Canon 7D, 75-300mm Lens

Frog floating in a man made pond on the shore of Lake Wanaka, South Island of New Zealand.  Note the insect in the right hand side.  The frogs would float without moving then suddenly go for these insects, but were way too fast for me to record that.

These are the Southern Bell Frogs, an Australian Import to New Zealand.

After the Rain

Canon 7D, 100mm Macro Lens, Textured background

We've had drought here in NZ over the whole country after a hot dry and very long summer.  Yesterday it rained for the first time since early summer and nature just drank it up with joy. Looks like winter may be on its way finally.

New Zealand Kea

Canon 7D, 120-400mm Sigma Lens

The Kea is the world's only alpine parrot. Its omnivorous diet includes carrion but consists mainly of roots, leaves, berries, nectar, and insects. Now uncommon, the Kea was once killed for bounty due to concerns by the sheep-farming community that it attacked livestock, especially sheep. It received full protection only in 1986.
The Kea nests in burrows or crevices among the roots of trees. Kea are known for their intelligence and curiousity both vital to their survival in a harsh mountain environment. Kea can solve logical puzzles, such as pushing and pulling things in a certain order to get to food, and will work together to achieve a certain objective.

Beautiful misty autumn morning with light shining down the valley.  Layers of mist over the mountains. Autumn colours are here with the poplar trees the first to turn. Reminds me of the Hobbit Poem - Far over the Misty Mountains Old...
